Perast

Fašinada

On July 22nd, traditionally in honor of Our Lady of the Rocks, the famous Fašinada takes place. At the end of the day, the people of Perast and residents of surrounding settlements carry stones to the island in boats adorned with poplar branches. This tradition was included in Montenegro's intangible cultural heritage in 2013.

Perast

Our Lady of the Rocks

Legend has it that on July 22nd, 1452, sailors found an icon of the Mother of God with the child on a rock in the middle of the sea. From that day on, the tradition emerged for sailors, upon returning from successful voyages, to lay stones along the coast of Our Lady of the Rocks.

For centuries, this island, created by human hands, has been evolving. Its foundations in the depths of the bay conceal hundreds of decommissioned sailing ships, filled with stone and sunk to ensure the island continues to stand above the water.

The church contains a large number of artworks by the renowned Kotor painter Tripo Kokolja, as well as the icon of Our Lady of the Rocks, created in 1452 by Lovro Dobričević.

Perast

Witnesses to Perast's former splendor, wealth, and grandeur are the palaces from the era of prosperity in the 17th and 18th centuries. There are 19 palaces, and most of them feature traditional elements with a blend of Baroque architecture.

Some of the most famous ones include the Bujović Palace, Balović Palace, Zmajević Palace, and Mazarović Palace. Due to its rich cultural heritage, the beauty of preserved and even slightly deteriorated buildings, unusual stories and legends, as well as the peace and quiet it offers, Perast is attractive to all lovers of the sea, maritime history, art, and those seeking somewhat forgotten values.

Blue cave

The Blue Cave is one of the most beautiful and largest caves among a series of caves - gorges, located along the very rugged coastline of the Luštica Peninsula in the Bay of Kotor. The cave is situated between the Zlatna luka cove and Cape Mokra Gora, and it is 5.7 nautical miles away from Herceg Novi.

It has two openings at a 45-degree angle, a smaller one on the southern side and a larger one on the southwest side, which is 3m high and around 15m wide. Ordinary boats and smaller ships can enter the cave.

The depth of the sea inside the cave is 4 - 5m. The height from sea level to the top of the ceiling is 9m, and its surface area is about 300m². It gets its name from the unusually crystal blue color that occurs due to the reflection of sunlight bouncing off its surface during clear days.
